Seaweed as a natural garden fertilizer

We have used seaweed as a natural fertilizer for years.  Annie started using it in the 1990's whilst still living in Scotland, and purchased liquid seaweed or kelp meal from the Henry Doubleday Research Association.  She noticed that it encouraged root growth, the veggie plants were greener, and the veggies grew larger.  She continues to seaweed on her gardens in Maine: as a mulch around fruit trees (and we have never had a problem with it attracting flies), and dried and ground up as a soil conditioner on vegetable beds.
